Pals have loaned us the DVD box set of the first (& only) season of Freaks & Geeks, a TV series that aired on NBC in 1999, before being yanked due to low viewership. It is so uncannily accurate in its portrayal of adolescence in the Midwest during the early 80's that it's difficult to watch sometimes, yet fascinating & funny as hell.

The teens in "Freaks and Geeks" are not looking back, all wistful and wise, at their youth, or reading their most secret diary passages to us. The kids on "Freaks and Geeks" are living in the moment, numb from the trauma of being picked on by bullies, made fun of by the popular crowd and misunderstood by parents and teachers. They don't have the self-awareness to reflect deeply on their lives; they're putting one foot in front of the other, like prison inmates, crossing the days off until their sentence is up. -Salon.com

Which pretty much sums up the adolescent experience of ol' slothy! The show was written by Paul Feig (who grew up 3 miles away from me in suburban Detroit) and Judd Apatow. The teenagers on the show are played by actual teens for the most part, and the geeks are painfully geeky. Despite the fact that it only survived for one season, F&G won some big awards and has been the launch-pad for lots of careers. Watch the intro* for names you might recognize. If you still have any doubts about it, check out the user rating on IMDB. It is a mystery how a show this good ended up on network television.

*(That Joan Jett intro song always reminds me of the great Peaches version, I Don't Give A Fuck,** and I sometimes can't restrain myself from shouting the lyrics at the TV whenever we watch Freaks & Geeks, much to the irritation of those around me...)

LCD Soundsystem opened for Arcade Fire last month at Randall's Island, and they put on an amazing show, completely upstaging AF, who are just kind of annoying live. LCD's front man, James Murphy, is also the co-founder of DFA Records. Onstage he comes across all debauched and cuddly -- he's in his 30s and kind of on the roundish side -- and is really good with the funny between-song banter. They are local and even though they're on tour right now, I've been ritually sacrificing bugs & small rodents to the gods of rock in hopes of more NYC shows in the near future.

Admittedly I'm a little late coming to this band... sorry if this is old news. But if you haven't heard it yet, I command you to check out LCD's ruefully comedic song Losing My Edge. <---(Warning: there are a few seconds of chaotic noise at the beginning that you have to get through, but it's worth it. Also, this is an 8-minute song, so if you're ADD-afflicted, be sure to take your Ritalin™ first... again, worth it.) Then, for a sweet antidote to all that irony, I recommend bathing your cochleae in Someone Great.

And for all you proud NORTH AMERICANS out there, please rise and sing the national anthem...

The !!! show at Webster Hall a few weeks ago was superfunz! It was part of a tour for their excellent "Myth Takes" album; the evening ended with certain bloggers dirty dancing on a runway stage with male strippers (I sort of wish I was kidding). This was not part of the show, but a strange and Velveeta-cheesy moment of psychotic post-concert abandon.

JD and I went to see the Alice Neel documentary at the Cinema Village on Sunday, and then we walked to the park and sat and talked about it for an hour and a half. Here are some thoughts:

Alice Neel was brilliant and an empath. She empathized with fish in a fishtank to the point of desperate tearfulness.

She was not a happy person, said she was "serving her sentence" rather than jumping out the window. But she left the world with dozens of incredible paintings. Maybe happiness is beside the point?

Each painting captured something about its era, but they also seem incredibly fresh and alive, even today... although I'm not sure why or even what that means...

There's an interview with Robert Storr where he talks about photography as a "morbid" slice of time, versus Neel's experience of a person over a longer period of time, the specific nuance and gesture of the sitter.

She did what she wanted to do in life, outside of prescribed gender strictures. She lived as if sexism and misogyny didn't exist, and in some ways paid a price for it.

She had several children fathered by different men; the kids suffered from neglect because mom was so busy with her painting... she maybe shouldn't have had kids?

She was operating outside of the mainstream of accepted painting strictures. The movie villainized ab-ex painters... to Neel it must have seemed like an unyielding, spattery wall that she couldn't breach.

Is it more important to contextualize your work & open yourself up to outside influence & change, or better to stubbornly stick to your vision, even if it's unfashionable?

Some shows:
The Knife

• a few months back at Webster Hall. The visuals were really high-production and theatrical, mostly projections on scrims to make for the 3-D effect. There was also a sculptural/video component that was a verbatim rip-off of Tony Oursler.
• Music-wise it did not deviate from their recordings one iota. The whole thing had to have been lip-synched... in fact, I don't think they ever even bothered to move their mouths. Maybe their lips were paralyzed?
• There was, however, lots of bouncing around in monkey costumes. and they poked at a keyboard once in awhile.
• Throw them to the lions.

Datarock

• at Studio B in Brooklyn last month. Ah, an actual live act, nothing fancy, just a really good, energetic show that exceeded expectations.
• The red track suits and wraparound sunglasses were a little stale, but the band is from Norway, so they probably don't have regular access to TV or the internet.
• You might remember I posted about them a while back. Back when my blog was better, before "the waning."

Jazz Butcher

Remembering the Datarock show made me think of the best live shows I've ever seen, which reminded me of The Jazz Butcher, which was definitely in the top 3. Maybe it was even the best. I saw them ten thousand years ago in the Pleistocene Era in a college cafeteria in Winsor, Canada and then again in Ann Arbor. This is a full-page ad promoting my former beige. It was published on the back cover of a fancy, oversized industry magazine a few months back, right after they won a big, huge account... the biggest possible account really, okay it was WalMart. Right after it was published, they disowned the ad, saying that they didn't know how it got printed...? which is kind of a big thing to not be aware of i am thinking. So then what happened is that they lost the account, because it came out that the 2 people who clinched the deal were messing around with each other. There's this client... he is a sweet, shy, Japanese kid who barely speaks english and bows to me constantly & if I sit on a chair he'll sit on the floor because he says his head can't be above mine. He's one of the clients I see every few weeks one-on-one for an hour or so. Anyway, this week he showed me a box of ceramic bananas that he'd made, around maybe 20 of them, fired with different glazes, some collaged with newspaper. There were a few that looked just like a turd and for some reason it made me very happy to see these things I had never seen before, a new category of object, turd-bananas. I don't think he meant to make them look so poo-like; he just wanted to make them appear rotty and decomposed, and in fact he seemed to be unaware of the resemblance, but really, I mean just look at them!

Also partly I was happy because the last time I'd met with him we had talked for an hour about another ceramic piece he'd made that was essentially a planter, and I had to dig very deep down to come up with stuff to say about interiority vs. exteriority, nature and culture, minimalism and earthworks, yadda-yadda. By comparison it was really easy to talk about those bananas.

Endings are in the Log-air these days: the end of Daylight Savings Time... the end of a certain era for Slothy... and, 2 nights ago, legendary rock gods Lesion played their last show after 9 years of genius creative output, much to the sadness of their devoted fans. The turnout was huge, the crowd was jacked up on beer and candy corn for the sendoff, and the band kicked out a BLISTERING set. But first they screened 2 of their hilarious movies, one of which has bit parts for Slothy and Mr. Sloth. Both films are great, but "The Sucking" is my all-time favorite, with Dr. Hurtz in a dual role as himself and the bloodthirsty Dr. Mufungo. Watch the trailer and listen for audio werkz by DJ Dekker.

We were given the task of videotaping the entire show, which prevented us from doing a lot of jumping around. Here is a video clip of my personal favorite song, "Giant," taken with our little Canon Elph. Apologies for the poor sound quality; the footage from the fancycam has yet to be edited.

Last night the fabulous Jakkee (seen here as Charlene from "Designing Women") threw an Everyone Loves Halloween party; I was originally going to wear my formal 'tard helmet and seatbelt restraints, but they're at the cleaner's. So I resurrected an old Land O' Lakes spokes-squaw costume and picked up some maize from Gristede's for a Corn Maiden effect (sorry for stepping on any corn toes out there...)

Word on the street is that pink is the new black, up is the new down, and beginning is the new end.

To my eye, the Capt'n's Roast was a smashingly good time; the food was great, the peeps were the best possible peeps, the conversation flowed, nobody did anything embarrassing, and all was well with the world. So how is it that, the next day, so many attendees (myself included) have these weird nagging feelings of guilt about our behavior? Wazzup with that? It wasn't the tequila... Mr. AH stuck with beer and he also shared in this phenom. And it definitely wasn't unique to this particular party, either; it happens all the time.

I'm going to go burn some sage now.

Hullo, we're back from the wilds, completely wrung out and exhausted from the fam-a-thon. At the last minute Hyena and I were put up at a friend's house in Truro: a truly amazing Italian-style villa overlooking Pilgrim Lake and Provincetown harbor. Very un-Capey, but who's complaining? They were out of town, so we had the whole place to ourselves. The absolute high point of the weekend was a visit from Corny, Mrs. Cub, Dubz, and Mr. Dubz on Saturday night for drinx. Afterwards we went out for some chow at the local clam-shaq and took a walk around crazycrazy Ptown. Dubz re-discovered her "friend" the monument, and we descended on the army-navy store for a try-on extravaganza. It was big fun, but truth be told, certain persons were missed...

The pay is low, but the glamour factor is high, and it's done wonders for my upper-body strength...

That's right, little Slothy snagged a position as dominatrix at a fine norf*ckeneastern institootion of higher learning starting this fall.
The future is looking bright, a golden road paved by the tears of mine own Selfish Little Takers®, with scenic views of Poverty Junction and Panic Attack City.

See you in a few days! Good news: there's finally an internet café in Ptown, so I will try to check in blogside. (I asked Corny why, as Dictator of the World, she hasn't established coast-to-coast universal WiFi yet... she said she'd have to get back to me on that.) Bright-n-early Sunday, lil' slothy will be setting the gyroscopes due north and lifting off for a brief Peace Corps stint at The Cod. The assignment this time around is to get running water, cooking and refrigeration hooked up for the natives, and to see to their general health and well-being. They only communicate through an arcane dialect that JD has dubbed "P.A." The language barrier can be frustrating, but copious lubrication helps to offset this issue.

The recent spate of norf*ckneasters (meaning the weather, not the kickass east-coast team of pretend surf goddesses) has taken its toll on the sloth family vacation shack. Here are two views of it in its current state:

Therefore and forthwith, slothy and HFP will be taking our little red truck, aka the Pimple, aka the Lollycar, up to the shifting and pelting sands of "The Cod" this weekend for some heavy construction and the traditional family bickerfest. Thus begins the cycle of deferred summertime fun, which is the way of things past and things to come for ever and ever, ad infinitum.

Housie has lost an important leg, which we will be replacing. There is the real and exciting possibility that the Love Shack might actuallly fall upon us like the Wicked Witch of the East, leaving our toes to curl right up to our striped knee-highs! One can only hope to meet such a spectacular end...

So much wonderful art to see, it makes the head spin... tonight is (AT LAST!) the impatiently-anticipated opening at Feigen Contemporary of new paintings by the lovely and brilliant Jennifer Coates:

These compelling works are mysterious and visionary, luminous and virtuosic. Trees, stones, fizz, tangles, and orifices combine to evoke a place that is both exterior and interior, mind and body.

Then on Saturday, Nicole Eisenman's enormous, landmark, earth-moving diptych, "Progress: Real and Imagined," is finally unveiled at Leo Koenig:

(click on the image for a larger version.) It was my great fortune to get a preview of this tremendous work in person, and I tell you it blew me right out of my shoes! This absolute masterpiece depicts a sweeping odyssey of epic proportions and cycle-of-life allegory. It functions wonderfully as a whole, but is also many paintings-within-a-painting, with narrative and painterly passages telling a story of humor, pathos, struggle, and hope.

And plus, last but not least, our own beloved HFP (aka Adam Hurwitz) is in a show, too!!! The 181st Annual invitational show opened last night at The National Academy of Design. The galleries and halls of their beautiful mansion are decked out with the works of over 100 artists, including this large, knockout painting by the Hyena himself:

This is how I make money now. I hang out by my front stoop and challenge passersby to various kinds of competitions of the "iron man" variety. In this photo, I am allowing the geezer to win so he will come back for more, then I raise the stakes. Tricky, right?
